To become a licensed cosmetologist in the state of Alabama, you must complete 1500 hours of coursework or 3000 hours of apprenticeship. The same is true of an Ethetician but to become a nail tech, you only have to complete 750 hours of coursework or 1200 hours of apprenticeship. Alabama does not have a license specific to only hairdressers. Reciprocity in Alabama consists of meeting the current licensure requirement for hours and presenting five years of proof of licensed experience.

Once you graduate and obtain your license you can expect to average between $18,000 and $26,000 a year in Alabama. The amount of money you earn will depend on the type of salon you work in, the salon’s location and the services you are able to offer.
