Cosmetologist license applicants in Maine must have completed the 10th grade satisfactorily and be at least 17 years old. They must either complete at least 1500 hours of cosmetology training at a hairdressing school in Maine within a 9-month period or work as a cosmetologist trainee for at least 2500 hours and at least 18 months. Once the hairdresser training or trainee period is complete, the applicant must take a state examination and pay the license fee. In addition, the applicant must pay for a criminal background check.
Cosmetologist licensees from other state can apply for licensure by endorsement. To apply, you must provide proof that you are at least 17 years old and have a 10th grade education or higher. You must also submit a verification of licensure from the state in which you are licensed that shows how many hours of cosmetology education you have completed as well as verifying that you passed the state exam and your license is current. If you have less than 1500 hours of cosmetology training, you can submit proof of your work experience for consideration. You must also pay the required fee when submitting your application.
